Good Lighting for a Better Learning Environment
New booklet about lighting for educational establishments
From kindergardens to schools, to universities – every educational establishment presents major challenges for the lighting designer. The lighting needs to create optimal conditions for learning and at the same time ensure a sense of wellbeing.
The new licht.de booklet licht.wissen 02 "Good Lighting for a Better Learning Environment" provides impartial information and tips on lighting for kindergardens, schools, universities and adult education centres. Apart from focusing on the traditional classroom, it also looks at libraries, laboratories and other types of room as well as outdoor lighting for school yards and car parks. Basic lighting issues are addressed by Lighting Specials, which provide information on matters such as energy efficiency and refurbishment. Another section explains how light impacts on human beings and shows how optimised lighting boosts motivation and promotes concentration.
The booklet licht.wissen 02 "Good Lighting for a Better Learning Environment" can be downloaded as a PDF.
Click tip: Stair lighting
Step lights provide additional illuminance on treads
Poor stair lighting can cause accidents. The light can dazzle or may be too dim. Optimal lighting illuminates the individual stairs so they are clearly recognisable. Short shadows ensure that treads are clearly distinguishable, long shadows can result in individual treads being obscured.
Luminaires should be installed at each top landing. The correct solution for staircase lighting is an adequate number of wall or ceiling luminaires with wide-angled beam mounted parallel to the stairs. The recommended illuminance is 150 lux; for outdoor staircases, 10 lux is considered a minimum. Step lights integrated in the wall can be used to provide additional illuminance on treads.
More information is available at our lighting examples and in the booklet licht.wissen 14 "Ideas for Good Home Lighting".
